Asset based or not asset based ?

I always wonder is it better to be have your own assets or no?

Personally I am a carrier and I mostly own trailers and lease on owner operators with their own trucks to my company. It has been working well for me because I do not have to deal with truck maintenance.

My question goes to the people that have been a carrier or are asset based brokers. Would you rather have your own assets or have no assets at all and broker out all your freight ?
