If you’re planning to go to an unfamiliar continent or mountain range to access backcountry with a guide, how do you assess their competence or risk profile in advance? And without qualification or lengthy experience and local knowledge, how can you assess unsafe risk and say no when prudent?

Getting to Val dʼIsère
Hey guys, what's the best way to get to Val dʼIsère from the UK ? Last year we drove, which was ok, but the drive out on a Saturday morning was awful and I wondered what others did? Best Marc
