Part 1: How to Choose the Right Running Attire (Beginner-Friendly Guide)
Why is this important?
The last thing you want to happen when training for a marathon is to be sidelined and have to interrupt your running schedule due to wearing the wrong shoes or uncomfortable clothing.
This can be avoided entirely by implementing just a few simple tips but before we get started, let’s get one thing straight!
You do not need fancy attire to run your first marathon. You need the right basics so your body feels supported not punished.
Now, let’s get down to business by starting with what I believe is one of the most important topics that will help you get a good start on your running journey.
👟 It’s all about the Shoes!
  • Starting your running journey in the wrong shoes is a good way to end your quest to finish your first race before it even gets started.
What To Do:
  • Go to a running specialty store if possible (not the local large commercial store)
  • Tell them:“I’m a beginner training for my first marathon and want injury-safe shoes.”
The staff at the specialty stores are generally very friendly and knowledgeable about many different types of running shoes and can provide guidance based on your specific needs.
Many of these running stores also have a “Runway”. Which is an area specifically for guests to run while the running specialist observes their running gait. This gives them more insight on which shoes would be a better fit or provide more support for each individual.
🔍 Tips on What to look for:
  • Comfortable immediately (no “breaking in” pain)
  • Enough toe room (your toes should wiggle)
  • Supportive, not stiff (the sole should be flexible)
  • Neutral colors or flashy — doesn’t matter
🚫 Tips on What NOT to do:
  • Don’t buy based on looks ( it’s all about comfort and support)
  • Don’t buy shoes that “might work later” (“they work now”)
  • Don’t train in old gym shoes
👉 If it hurts in the store, it will hurt more on mile 8.
*Remember: Try to avoid the local large commercial store. Visit your nearest running specialty store. If you are not familiar with a store, a simple Google search will do.
*Now if you haven’t yet done so, go ahead to Part 2 where I discuss the importance of wearing proper clothing and also give you some great tips to help you choose the right running attire.
Comment below:
  • 👟 What shoes are you currently running in?
  • ❓ Are you shopping soon or already set?
We’ll help you think it through — no judgment here.
