How to know if you’re training at the right pace?
One of the most common questions beginner runners ask is: ‘How do I know if I’m running at the right pace?’ Usually, what they really mean is: “Am I running too slow or am I about to mess this up?’” If you’ve never run a race before, this confusion is completely normal. Most beginners don’t get injured because they’re doing too little. They get injured because they’re doing too much, too soon. That typically comes from running faster than their body is ready for — especially early in training. Here is the truth: 👉 If you’re training for your first marathon, most of your runs should feel easier than you expect. If it feels “too easy,” that’s usually a good sign. THE TALK TEST: The simplest way to know if you’re running at the right pace is something called the Talk Test. Here’s how it works: • If you can speak full sentences while running → you’re at the right pace • If you can only get out one or two words → slow down • If you’re gasping or panicking → you’re running too hard You don’t need a watch. You don’t need pace charts. You need to be able to talk.” WHY SLOW IS NOT FAILURE: A lot of beginners worry that running slow means they’re doing it wrong. But slow running: • Builds endurance • Protects your joints • Helps you recover faster • Allows consistency week after week *Consistency is what finishes marathons — not speed. The right pace often feels: • Controlled • Slightly boring • Sustainable • Like you could keep going longer If you finish every run completely wiped out, that’s a sign you’re pushing too hard — not training smarter. To Conclude: If you’re a beginner training for your first marathon, give yourself permission to run easy. Finishing isn’t about how fast you train, it’s about showing up consistently. Feel free to dive in to the community and ask questions and connect with your peers. 👕 PART 2: How to Choose the Right running Attire
Why Wearing the Right Running Clothing Matters (Especially for Beginners) When you’re training for your first marathon, the right running clothes aren’t about looking like a runner — they’re about protecting your body so you can keep going. 1️⃣ It prevents pain that makes people quit The wrong clothes cause: - Chafing - Blisters - Overheating - Discomfort that feels like injury Most beginners don’t quit because running is hard — they quit because it’s unnecessarily uncomfortable. 2️⃣ It helps your body regulate temperature Running clothes are designed to: - Pull sweat away from your skin - Keep you warmer in cold weather - Prevent overheating in heat Cotton holds moisture. Wet fabric = friction + cold + irritation. 3️⃣ It protects your confidence (this matters more than you think) When your clothes: - Stay in place - Don’t ride up - Don’t need constant adjusting You stay focused on the run — not on feeling awkward or exposed. *Confidence is part of performance. 4️⃣ It supports consistency (the real goal) The goal isn’t one “perfect” run. The goal is showing up week after week. Comfortable clothes make it easier to say: “I can do this again tomorrow.” Beginner reminder 💙 You don’t need expensive gear. You need the right basics that don’t work against you. What’s been the most uncomfortable thing you’ve experienced while running so far? - Chafing - Overheating - Clothes moving too much - Something else? Drop it below — you’re not alone.

Part 1: How to Choose the Right Running Attire (Beginner-Friendly Guide)
Why is this important? The last thing you want to happen when training for a marathon is to be sidelined and have to interrupt your running schedule due to wearing the wrong shoes or uncomfortable clothing. This can be avoided entirely by implementing just a few simple tips but before we get started, let’s get one thing straight! You do not need fancy attire to run your first marathon. You need the right basics so your body feels supported not punished. Now, let’s get down to business by starting with what I believe is one of the most important topics that will help you get a good start on your running journey. 👟 It’s all about the Shoes! - Starting your running journey in the wrong shoes is a good way to end your quest to finish your first race before it even gets started. What To Do: - Go to a running specialty store if possible (not the local large commercial store) - Tell them:“I’m a beginner training for my first marathon and want injury-safe shoes.” The staff at the specialty stores are generally very friendly and knowledgeable about many different types of running shoes and can provide guidance based on your specific needs. Many of these running stores also have a “Runway”. Which is an area specifically for guests to run while the running specialist observes their running gait. This gives them more insight on which shoes would be a better fit or provide more support for each individual. 🔍 Tips on What to look for: - Comfortable immediately (no “breaking in” pain) - Enough toe room (your toes should wiggle) - Supportive, not stiff (the sole should be flexible) - Neutral colors or flashy — doesn’t matter 🚫 Tips on What NOT to do: - Don’t buy based on looks ( it’s all about comfort and support) - Don’t buy shoes that “might work later” (“they work now”) - Don’t train in old gym shoes 👉 If it hurts in the store, it will hurt more on mile 8. *Remember: Try to avoid the local large commercial store. Visit your nearest running specialty store. If you are not familiar with a store, a simple Google search will do.
