Panaculty- A northeast staple dish
Panaculty (also spelt like Panackelty) originates from the working class families of the miners and ship yard workers. Originally used with left overs from a roast. To save money and waste.
During the war it was seen as a survival dish as food was limited.
Each mining town in the north east had the own little twist on the recipe.
In Northumberland they call it Pan Haggerty by adding cheese. Others add veg into it and some even add sausage.
The version I grew up with originated from Sunderland/Durham. I grew up in South Shields.
Which consists of POTATOES, ONIONS, BACON, CORNED BEEF AND GRAVY.
in the video you’ll see I’m using turkey bacon because of my pork allergy. So no pork bacon for me 😩.
So I hope you give it ago. And enjoy it as much as I do. 🥰
