I just watched The Odyssey. Beyond being blown away by the filmmaking, I couldn’t help but notice the leadership lessons woven throughout the story. From success and pride to decision-making, influence, perseverance, and legacy, there were principles that extend far beyond the screen. Here are a few leadership takeaways that stood out to me. No spoilers. 1. Today’s win doesn’t guarantee tomorrow’s win. Every victory creates a new leadership challenge. Success should increase humility, not certainty. 2. Pride grows where discernment shrinks. Early success can create dangerous overconfidence. As pride increases, discretion and wisdom often decrease. 3. Ownership over excuses. Great leaders take responsibility for what happens next rather than living off what happened before. 4. Decisions compound. Small decisions rarely stay small. Today’s choices become tomorrow’s reality. 5. Listening is imperative. Leadership is often determined by the voices you choose to amplify. Knowing who to listen to is just as important as knowing who not to listen to. 6. Be careful what you consume in moments of desperation. Desperation clouds discernment. What you consume during difficult seasons can either strengthen your future or sabotage it. 7. When what you’re pursuing is pure, the pain of the journey is worth it. Purpose doesn’t eliminate hardship. The struggle often produces the perspective, wisdom, and character needed to steward what you’re pursuing. 8. Growth requires surrender. Be willing to relinquish control in order to move forward. “You can have growth or control, but you can’t have both.” 9. Leadership is ultimately about succession. Great leaders don’t simply achieve; they prepare others. Your greatest legacy is not what you accomplish, but what continues because you led. Great stories entertain us.
