Memory Misunderstandings & Misunderstanding Memory
It's 🧠 Thought-Taming Thursday where we focus on taming your tension by taming your thoughts As community leaders and founders, how we think about thinking shapes the culture we create. One of the most overlooked leadership skills is understanding how memory really works ... and how easily we misunderstand it. 🖥️ Think of your brain like a desktop. Neuropsychology calls this “working memory,” and it can only hold about 5–8 items at once. That means what’s in your mind and what’s on your mind aren’t always the same. For leaders, this has big implications: - Invisible influence: Just because you’re not aware of a thought doesn’t mean it isn’t guiding how you show up for your community. - Emotions before thoughts: You might feel frustration, pride, or overwhelm in your group without realizing the subtle thought that triggered it. - The blame trap: It’s easy to assume someone else’s behavior “made” you react, but your response always comes from your own thinking. - Not forgotten: Just because members aren’t talking about something doesn’t mean it’s irrelevant. Quiet topics still shape group energy. 🤔 Why this matters for WISE Skool Building and WISE Skoolers When we misunderstand memory, we risk misunderstanding people. Community thrives when members feel seen, heard, and valued which requires leaders who can tame their own thoughts first Strong self-leadership 💪🧠 By practicing awareness of our mental “desktop,” we create more space for patience, perspective, and personal connection. 💡 This builds consistency and trust, the very foundations of strong communities.
