How to price your creativity?
When I was 12, I discovered silk painting.
I loved how the colors danced on the fabric, how my little shared bedroom with my sister suddenly became an artist’s studio. It felt important. It felt magical.
My scarves weren’t masterpieces, but they were good enough to attract my first customers: my mom’s friends.
I still remember how I calculated my prices:
I looked at what “real artists” were charging… and then I set mine lower. Because I didn’t believe I was one.
And still, it was good money for a 12-year-old.
And then came the orders.
At first, you’d think this would make me feel like a “real artist.”
But instead, it made me miserable.
I obsessed about whether the scarves were good enough. I knew nobody would give me honest feedback, after all, I was just a kid. I felt pressure instead of joy. Eventually, I quit. Painting had lost its charm.
Fast forward.
I still wrestle with the same feeling: How do you monetize creativity without killing the joy?
For me, the answer became workshops.
I designed them like they were my own parties, full of energy and connection. And this time, I priced them differently: not under market value, but a little above.
And that’s when it clicked:
It wasn’t that I wasn’t meant to earn from creativity.
It was that I wasn’t charging enough back then.
** Low prices bring overwhelm, burnout, and doubt.
** Fair (or even higher) prices bring confidence, balance, and joy.
So here’s my lesson for every “confused creative” out there:
Your creativity is a goldmine. Price it like one.
