How good is your balance?
I've noticed that none of the elderly people I work with is able to do the exercise I'm going to explain.
The person is in the position of the picture you see below (arms open or close whether we want to decrease or increase the difficulty respectively). Few patients are able to keep their balance in a heel-to-toe position (or tandem stance), but when I asked them to completely turn their head to the right and to the left (while, of course, maintining this position) it simply becomes impossible to keep their balance and they need to quickly hold onto something not to fall.
This exercice clearly creates 'sensory conflict' since it implies a vestibular stimulation and it breaks the visual dependency of staring at a fixed point, requiring a greater implication of proprioception.
If you feel like giving it a try, I would love to hear your thoughts ☺️
