Adopted Adaptations
Sometimes what feels like personality is actually adaptation.
We learn ways to move through the world because they help us survive a particular environment.
Avoid the crowd.
Stay home.
Don’t ask for help.
Don’t be too visible.
Control the conditions.
Make people come to you.
At first, these strategies can feel protective.
And sometimes they are.
But an adaptation can become so familiar that we stop noticing it as a response and start calling it who we are.
That is where observation becomes useful.
Change the environment.
Change the people.
Change the conditions.
Then notice what remains.
If the same activation keeps appearing after the variables change, you may be getting closer to the deeper pattern.
The goal is not to shame the adaptation.
It probably served a purpose.
The question is whether it still serves you now.
Sometimes the refuge that once protected us eventually becomes an enclosure.
Awareness helps us recognize the difference.
Observe → Recognize → Discern → Choose
What was inherited?
What was adapted?
What was adopted because it worked?
And what are you ready to choose differently now?
