We often hear the word “healing” a lot but do we really even understand what this means?
I think a lot of times when people hear the healing they assume crying & reliving your trauma but it's not. People often times say that healing is very ugly & difficult & it can be but it's also a really beautiful thing. It should not make you suffer. Yes, in the beginning, it is very true that you have to walk through & understand yourself but continuing to sit there crying & cycling through your trauma is not the definition of healing. This is the definition of re-traumatizing yourself.
Healing is the creation of new patterns. We have to heal ourselves because somewhere in our life we experienced a trauma or multiple. There are a lot of different types of trauma. It's not really a matter of how mild or how much worse it is from another person's trauma. Regardless it is still very traumatic & it affects us deeply if it is the only thing that we have ever known.
There are so many broken people in the world that walk around thinking that there's nothing wrong with them. The truth is that many people speak very negatively to themselves & some of them are even horrible & abusive to those around them simply because they are hurting & they're not acknowledging it. They don't even realize how much they are hurting because they are numbing themselves from understanding. They would rather take the pain out on other people, even people that they don't know versus looking at it & understanding why that behavior exists. Some people will even make their pain into a joke to dull how incredibly horrible they feel. These are all signs that you have healing work to do even if you don't think you do.
One of the first steps to healing is acknowledging the trauma that you experienced. You have to acknowledge that it is affecting you & not just brush it off because others may have it worse. There are so many people that need to heal & so many of them don't realize it & they don't want to acknowledge it. They are comfortable being in pain because it's the only thing they've ever known.
They don't know how amazing life can truly be once you start healing yourself. So many people in this world are completely lost in their pain. Their trauma is completely normal to them. Healing is the work of actively changing those patterns every single day & it's not something that ever really ends, but it does change overtime & it becomes easier once it becomes a habit & a pattern. Everyone can still work to bettering themselves, even when they think they are their best version.
Sometimes I even get irritated with myself because I use the word healing so much & that is a big reason why I'm making this post right now because I'm trying to explain to myself what healing is. I know that many people question & often times forget, myself included. Healing is the changing of patterns from something that is negative & detrimental to something that is positive & beneficial for you & everyone in your vicinity. Hearing the word healing over & over again can get kind of obnoxious & it really makes you question, what is healing? Am I healing?
The answer is that if you are regularly creating new patterns for yourself that are better for you & everyone else, then yes, you are. Healing is not a linear process & it is very difficult. Sometimes we feel very high in our healing & other times, we will feel very low in our healing but it's not something that should make you suffer. Sometimes it will feel like you're not healing at all. Especially, if you're sad, mad, depressed, anxious, or scared. This is because uncomfortable energy is moving through you, but the thing is that when we allow ourselves to feel all of those uncomfortable feelings, we are so much closer to healing than somebody who just blocked it all out. People who ignore their emotions are blocked off from feeling both bad & good things. They essentially live in a state of numbness, they don't have to feel uncomfortable, but they also don't get to feel good either. You cannot just selectively shut off negative emotions. When you shut off your feelings, you are shutting yourself off from everything.
If you wake up every day & you are dedicated to creating new patterns for yourself, if you are dedicated to making changes to become your best possible version regardless of any negativity, obstacles or struggles that you face then you are absolutely healing & you're doing an amazing job.
