🎧 NEW PODCAST INTERVIEW
Megan Hensley grew up outside Sacramento with animals as her closest companions β€” the kids at school didn't get her, but the animals always did. After dropping out of high school at 15, a stint in the US Army, conservation work that brought her to Australia, and a chance apprenticeship with a compassionate farrier, Megan found her calling: the care and welfare of donkeys. Nearly 20 years on, she is one of the most respected donkey farriers in the United States, founder of the Donkey Hooves and Health Academy with over a thousand students worldwide, and a tireless voice for an animal that has been misunderstood, misused, and underserved for far too long. This conversation is about donkeys β€” but it is also about trust, patience, and what happens when you meet another being exactly where they are. Episode Pillars ● The Rebel Who Found Her Calling: From dropping out of school at 15 to the US Army to conservation work in the Australian outback β€” how Megan's winding path led her to a 20-year career as a donkey farrier. ● Donkeys Are Not Stubborn β€” They Are Discerning: The biggest misconception about donkeys, why they end up mistreated and mislabelled, and what it actually means to earn a donkey's trust. ● The Care Bear Stare and the Science Behind It: How Megan uses loving intention β€” and heart-centred energy backed by HeartMath research β€” to reach animals that no one else can get near. ● Romulus: Six Months to Liberty: The story of a mule so traumatised by a previous farrier experience that he trembled and broke into a sweat at the sight of tools β€” and how patience over six months changed everything. ● The Donkey Hooves and Health Academy: How COVID forced Megan online and led to a global school teaching donkey owners to trim their own animals' hooves β€” stress free, halter free, and with their hearts on. Hey donkey folks! We are excited to be bringing home these new friends late this week. They have been living with goats and potbelly pigs and are very overweight. Best estimates put them at about 15 years old. Our hope is to slowly work them into better shape in the years ahead. I have done a lot of online research, but I’m hoping to collect any additional advice you might have.Teff Hay and Barley straw are not available as far as I can tell in Maine. I did find teff hay pellet and first cut hay. We have a great vet and will work with her as well, but hopeful to get a little donkey owner advice here! Thanks for any feeding tips you might have. I also ordered a sample of California trace mineral pellets for them to try.

Donkey Skin Issues - DIY Skin Potion πŸͺ„
✨ Prepare to be amazed by the most Magical and Rad DIY Donkey Skin Potion! ✨ Originally written back in 2019 Follow my recipe below andΒ you'll be mixing up your very own potion like a modern-day donkey-loving wizard πŸ§™β€β™‚οΈ This remedy has the power to soothe itching, banish hair loss, and tackle a plethora of other pesky skin issues. This easy-to-make topical has been my go-to donkey skin solution for the past 10 years. The DIY donkey skin potion is a mixture of *organic cold-pressed neem oil and avocado oil in a 1:6 ratio. Both oils have a multitude of benefits for your donkey's skin. *cold-pressed organic neem only Neem oil: Anti-fungal: Neem oil contains azadirachtin and other compounds that have anti-fungal properties, which may help treat fungal infections on donkey skin. Anti-parasitic: Neem oil can be effective against various parasites, including lice and mites, as it disrupts their growth and reproduction.Anti-inflammatory: The oil's anti-inflammatory properties may help soothe inflamed skin and reduce itching. Avocado oil: Moisturizing: Rich in fatty acids, avocado oil can help moisturize and nourish dry or damaged skin, promoting skin health. Hair growth: The oil may promote hair growth due to its nutrients and moisturizing properties.Soothing: Avocado oil has a soothing effect on irritated skin, which can help alleviate itchiness and discomfort. But hey, you don't have to take my word for it! πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ A quick Google search will reveal a treasure trove of information about the benefits of both Neem and Avocado oils. Directions: - Combine one part organic cold-pressed neem oil with six parts avocado oil in a clean container(for example, use 1 tablespoon of neem oil and 6 tablespoons of avocado oil). - Mix the oils well, ensuring they are thoroughly combined. - Apply the potion to your donkey's affected skin areas, taking care to cover all the problem spots. - Leave the oil on your donkey's skin, allowing it to work its magic on the affected areas and provide ongoing relief. - Reapply the treatment every 3 days, or as needed, depending on the severity of the skin issues.

minerals!
I just watched the video on nutrition and have a question. Our vet recommended a balancer pellet to supplement the forage diet with no loose mineral. I also give salt and vit E. thoughts?
