Whos Joining us Tomorrow Morning?
We all get asked... "So... what do you do?"
If I'm honest, my first reaction is usually that I'm being measured. But lately I've been thinking about that question a little differently.
At least in a business setting, I don't think people are really asking what you do. I think they're asking, "Can you help me?" Or maybe even, "Should I remember you?" That feels like a more useful way to think about it.
And just to be clear, I'm talking about business conversations here. If your uncle asks you at Thanksgiving, that's a completely different thing. But I'm in LA, and some of the best opportunities I've ever had have started with a casual conversation at a backyard BBQ where someone asked, "So... what do you do?" That's why I think this question matters.
This Thursday we're going to spend some time thinking about why that question matters, and how to answer it in a way that's clear, memorable, and genuinely useful. Not an elevator pitch. Just a simple, honest way of talking about what you do that helps people immediately understand who you help and what people hire you to do.
Here's what I think is really interesting. This conversation is the foundation for almost everything else. Your website. Your positioning. Your LinkedIn profile. Even how you introduce yourself on a Zoom call. Get really good at explaining what you do in a casual conversation, and all those other pieces suddenly become a whole lot easier.
Sometimes the biggest opportunities in your career start with the smallest question.
