He is going to walk out of the sea... "Messiah of Evil," 1974
I found out about this one from horror blogger Stacie Ponder and it is one of my favorites. Arletty, a young woman, comes to an isolated California town looking for her father, who has gone missing. The town's past is coming back in strange and unsettling ways. Arletty teams up with a trio of other outsiders to try and find out what is happening and where Arletty's father is. If you want something that *feels* like Innsmouth in the 1970s, this is it. There are some jump scares, but most of the movie is mood. It is designed to unsettle rather than to scare. Is it cosmic horror? Maybe. It is definitely Lovecraftian, and it ends with a pretty strong implication that the world as we know it is coming to a close. Right now, it is available free (with ads) on Tubi. It pops up on Shudder frequently, if you subscribe.
Just horrible
Saw the Void was mentioned. Did any of you watch "Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities"? The Autopsy is wild, and the ending is brilliant... if you can sit through it hehe
The Void - Pure Lovecraftian Nightmare Fuel
Hey cosmic horror fanatics! Just rewatched The Void (2016) I almost forgot how weird it is. This Canadian indie gem is hands down one of my favorites! Even though it looks a little old already (yup almost 10 years). For the ones who didn't watch it yet, here is a small plot: a small group of people trapped in a hospital, surrounded by mysterious hooded cultists (because why not), while reality itself starts breaking down around them. What starts as a siege thriller quickly descends into pure cosmic madness. Why this movie is cosmic horror perfection for me: - Body horror on the dot (You will like if you enjoyed The Substance) - Interdimensional beings that are genuinely incomprehensible and terrifying - Practical effects that are both disgusting and beautiful - That creeping dread of ancient forces beyond human understanding - A finale that goes full eldritch nightmare Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie clearly understand what makes cosmic horror work - it's not just about tentacles and madness, it's about that overwhelming sense that we're insignificant specks in a universe full of things we were never meant to understand. When I watched it the first time I didn't know about the genre, but now that I'm trying to understand it better, I like it so much more! Anyone else brave enough to dive into The Void? What did you think of those mind-bending final scenes? (Tag spoilers if you want to talk about it)

[SPOILERS] What did you think of the movie Weapons?
Went recently to see this with the crew. Have lots of thoughts to share but curious to hear yours! What did you think of the format? And how did the story play out for you?

Hello Cosmic Horror Movie Enjoyers ;)
I love watching and re-watching horror movies (kind of cozy for me) and since I joined the group (I’m learning a lot about it) It got me thinking about CH Movies that I already watched (without knowing it) and I wanted to share (and of course read your recommendations) on them. I wanted to start with The Cabin in the Woods (2011). Without spoiling anything (trust me, you want to go blind), this film starts as what seems like your typical "college kids go to a remote cabin" slasher... but then it completely flips everything you think you know about horror movies on its head. What makes it cosmic horror gold: - Mind-bending revelations that make you question reality itself - Ancient forces and entities that are way beyond human comprehension - A third act that goes absolutely WILD in the best possible way - Meta commentary that somehow makes the cosmic dread even more effective Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon crafted something truly special here - it's simultaneously a love letter to horror and a complete deconstruction of it. The final 30 minutes alone will leave you staring at the screen going "what the actual f just happened?" Has anyone else seen it? What did you think of that ending? (Let's keep spoilers tagged for newcomers!) I have also heard it has multiple endings or maybe it was a conspiracy theory 🤫
