If you’ve been a member for awhile, you may recall, I’m fascinated by Peeps, those unique marshmallow treats. I can entertain myself and kids for hours watching them joust in the microwave. My fascination with melting marshmallows goes back to the very first microwave we had growing up. So, sweet lab wouldn’t be complete without some marshmallow magic.
Marshmallow Magic
Marshmallows may look simple, but heat can change them in surprising ways. Compare two different heating methods and discover how the same marshmallow behaves in different conditions before turning your melted marshmallows into a delicious crispy treat.
Gather Your Gear
* Marshmallows
* Microwave-safe plate or bowl
* Medium saucepan
* 30 g (2 tablespoons) butter
* Wooden spoon or heat-safe spatula
* Crispy rice cereal or another light, crispy cereal
* Measuring cups
* Parchment paper or a lightly greased pan
* My Science Notebook (optional)
Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly before handling food.
Adult help is required for the stovetop portion. Heated marshmallow can be extremely sticky and hot.
Steps
1. Examine a marshmallow before heating. Gently squeeze it and notice its size, texture, and springiness.
2. Place one marshmallow on a microwave-safe plate.
3. Microwave it for 5 to 10 seconds, watching closely as it expands.
4. Allow it to cool before touching it. Compare its size and texture with an unheated marshmallow.
5. Place another marshmallow in a saucepan with the butter.
6. Ask an adult to heat it gently while stirring until it becomes smooth and melted.
7. Compare the microwave-heated marshmallow with the stovetop version. How did each one change?
8. Continue melting enough marshmallows with the butter to make crispy cereal treats.
9. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the cereal until it is evenly coated.
10. Press the mixture gently into a prepared pan. Allow it to cool before cutting and tasting.
Twist
Compare microwave heating and stovetop heating using the same size and number of marshmallows.
Observe:
* Which marshmallow expanded the most?
* Which melted more evenly?
* Which was easier to mix with the cereal?
What effect did the heating method have on the marshmallow?
