Five Days of Reading Adventures
I’ve discovered something interesting about being temporarily confined to one location.
People keep telling me to rest.
Rest? Me?
Apparently, they’re unfamiliar with my relationship with sitting still. My body may have declared a work stoppage, but my brain has filed an official protest.
So today, we’re turning to one of my favorite forms of rebellion: laughter.
There’s something wonderful about a book that makes you laugh out loud, especially when someone nearby asks what’s so funny and you can’t explain it without starting three chapters back.
And let’s face it, the world is serious enough. Sometimes we need a little nonsense.
Three Fiction Picks
1. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
The Earth is about to be demolished, the universe makes absolutely no sense, and the most important advice is DON’T PANIC. Absurd, clever, and gloriously ridiculous.
2. Anxious People by Fredrik Backman
A spectacularly unsuccessful bank robber, a group of strangers at an apartment viewing, and a hostage situation that goes completely sideways. Funny, tender, and surprisingly human.
3. Finlay Donovan Is Killing It by Elle Cosimano
A struggling single mom and mystery writer is accidentally mistaken for a contract killer. Naturally, things get complicated. A wonderfully chaotic combination of mystery and comedy.
Three Nonfiction Picks
1. A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson
Two thoroughly unprepared middle-aged men attempt to hike the Appalachian Trail. What could possibly go wrong? Quite a lot, as it turns out.
2. Born a Crime by Trevor Noah
Growing up in apartheid and post-apartheid South Africa was anything but funny, yet Noah finds extraordinary humor, humanity, and resilience in his experiences. Funny, moving, and thought-provoking.
3. Let’s Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson
A memoir of an unconventional childhood, anxiety, family eccentricities, and spectacularly awkward moments. Irreverent, outrageous, and definitely not for anyone who prefers their humor neatly behaved.
A Little Book-Picking Wisdom
Know your funny.
Some of us love dry British wit. Others prefer slapstick, absurd situations, sarcastic narrators, or characters who make spectacularly terrible decisions.
Before choosing a funny book, read a few pages or sample the audiobook. Humor is personal, and what makes one reader howl with laughter might leave another wondering what all the fuss is about.
And remember, audiobooks count! Sometimes a talented narrator makes an already funny story even better.
Your Turn!
What’s the last book that made you laugh out loud?
I’m talking actual laughter. The kind where someone looks over and asks if you’re okay.
Share your recommendations below. Bonus points if you tell us what made it so funny, without giving away the best bits.
My reading list is growing, and apparently, I have some time on my hands.
