Let’s Talk Mulch
Hey coco community, I’m Finn, your coconut man in the gardens. In these discussions I’ll be sharing with you the ways in which coconuts and coconut byproducts can be used within our garden spaces! 🪏🪴👨‍🌾 Today’s topic - mulch! Often when we think of the coconut palm we focus our attention on its consumable uses - be it oil, water, flesh, jelly. But did you know that our gardens love consuming this amazing plant, too? Coconut mulch is a powerhouse compared to common mulches like wood chips, sugarcane, straw, or leaf litter. While sugarcane and straw break down quickly and need constant topping up, and wood chips mostly add carbon with little nutrition, coconut mulch delivers both short-term and long-term benefits. Its flowers and spathes feed the soil fast, while husks and fronds decompose slowly, locking in moisture, improving aeration, and suppressing weeds for years. Rich in potassium and silica, it boosts flowering and fruiting better than most mulches, giving you the water-holding of sugarcane, the durability of wood chips, and the nutrient cycling of leaf litter all in one. I mean seriously, how much more can one plant provide us with!?🌴🤯 I would love to hear about the ways you’ve used coconuts in your garden - Feel free to share in the comments, and if you have any questions ask away! Here’s a few examples of whole plant coconut mulch we’ve created and put into gardens:
