🚽 Potty Training Myth or Fact?
One of the biggest myths I hear from parents is: ❌ "Every child should be potty trained by age 3."
The truth?
✅ Children become bathroom independent at different ages—and that's especially true for many autistic children and children with developmental disabilities.
Bathroom independence isn't just about using the toilet. It's a combination of many different skills, including:
• Recognizing the need to go
• Walking to the bathroom
• Pulling clothing up and down
• Sitting or standing appropriately
• Wiping
• Flushing
• Washing hands
• Tolerating the sensory experience of the bathroom
For some children, these skills come together quickly. For others, they develop one step at a time. And that's okay.
💙 Instead of asking, "Why isn't my child potty trained yet?"
Try asking: 👉 "What's the next bathroom skill my child is ready to learn?"
That small shift can completely change how you approach teaching independence.
