I heard an interesting question while listening to Tim Ferriss recently that stopped me in my tracks. Imagine you’re selling a learning platform or software subscription, and you want to make the offer incredibly attractive. You could offer a new customer ONE FREE YEAR of membership—or you could give them a $500 CREDIT toward the product. When the question was posed, the $500 credit seemed to be treated as the obvious winner. But I’m not convinced it is. A free year sounds effortless and complete: I don't have to pay for an entire year. A $500 credit, however, gives the offer a concrete dollar value: They're giving me $500. Even if the economics ultimately worked out similarly, I wonder whether our brains perceive these offers very differently.
