My family and I have recently moved to Alberta, Canada. We are embarking on a new chapter of our lives in a new country, learning new skills, although we farmed in the UK there’s always more to learn.
In the UK we farmed beef (Dexter cattle) and sheep, we were first generation farmers and farmed across Lancashire and North Yorkshire on small parcels of land. We built up our farm from scratch, when I first met my husband he had 15 sheep and a few chickens. In 10 years we built up to 60 head of cattle, 300 sheep, 20 goats, about 50 hens and few 10,000 bees!
Over the years we tried to get a far tenancy so that we could have our farm and family together but unfortunately, it was never to be. We often got to the final 2 but never that elusive tenancy and after having rented land taken from us to plant trees we decided on a different route. We sold up and moved to Canada to work on a beef and cereal ranch in Northern Alberta! Did we make the right decision……..
