Hey everyone here is a little video demonstrating the stages of bowmaking from start to finish. I'm using an American red oak board for this bow, a Powhatan style BITH (bend in the handle) flatbow. The board has already been cut to length and milled into a 2x2". It finished up drawing 55lb @ 26" being 68" long. The main stages of bowmaking can be boiled down to the following 8 stages: 1. Chasing a ring (may or may not be necessary depending on the tree species) 2. Laying out the profile 3. Cutting out the profile 4. Removing belly material 5. Floor tillering 6. Tree tillering 7. Test Shooting 8. Finishing These are the main stages excluding the selection, harvesting and curing of staves of course. Both heat treating and recurving can also be added steps in bowmaking. I demonstrate all of the above during this small video. Consider it an introduction to the process. I will explore each of these facets of bowmaking and more in much more detail as time progresses.
