Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia started Airbnb in 2007 when they were broke designers living in a small San Francisco apartment and struggling to pay rent. With a big conference in town and hotels sold out, they put air mattresses on their floor, created “Air Bed and Breakfast,” and rented their space to strangers. That simple idea helped them pay rent and showed that people were willing to stay in someone else’s home. Even after early success, investors laughed at them, rejected them, and told them the idea would never work.
