Day 2 : Sewing 101
If you missed Day 1, you can catch up here. (←click). We're going through the beginner's sewing course together. New tasks are posted every 3 days, and we'll sew a project together once everyone has complete task 2 (day 2).
Task 2 : Your next task is to build some confidence in front of your sewing machine!
Before we dive into a project, give yourself a chance to warm up and see how your machine is behaving. Practicing a few stitches helps you spot (and fix) issues early.
Not sure what all those functions and stitches mean? Find the Machine Functions + Stitches video with downloadable PDFs HERE
Most “machine problems” are usually one of these:
  • Incorrect threading
  • Wrong or blunt needle
  • Dust and lint build-up
❎Tension is rarely the true culprit, but if you need to adjust it slightly, I’ve added a tension video for you to watch.

🌱 HOW to practice?
You can print the PDF stitch practice sheets if you like, but I recommend using fabric scraps. Fabric moves and behaves like the real thing — paper doesn’t.
Use a contrasting thread so you can see what’s going on. And if you’re nervous about sewing straight, I’ve added a video with tips.

📸 Your homework:
  1. Cut a few fabric scraps about 2" (5cm) x 4" (10cm)
  2. Thread your machine with a contrasting colour
  3. Sew a few straight lines. TIP: try out different seam allowances : 1/4" , 3/8" etc.
  4. Practice backstitching at the beginning and end of each row
In a NEW post (not in the comments here) show us your test square or test pages!

A quick reminder :
Learning to sew is the same as learning to drive or playing a sport.
At first it feels like every movement takes a ton of concentration. But the more you do it, the more automatic it becomes. Every time you sew, even when you repeat the same project, your brain and muscles are improving without you realising.
That’s when you’re suddenly able to learn the next thing on top of it.
This is also why I encourage you to try a variety of projects, like the ones in The Creative Sewing Club, not just stuff labeled BEGINNER.
Even projects that look more advanced usually use the same essential skills, you’re just adding one or two new techniques at a time. By sewing different types of projects that still use these skills, you build confidence naturally while gradually moving up to the next “level.”
