I'm Mike, I used to make biscuits (cookies) and ship them worldwide.
For eight years I made cookies, starting in my home kitchen, expanding to a factory then outsourcing before selling my business in 2025. My biggest stumbling block to profit and baking happily was packaging. Jaw sealers, L-sealers, flow wrappers, infill, inners, outers... the endless list of packing nightmares. I'm here to help. Hopefully you can help other people out too with your experience. I started selling online in the 90's, everything from underwater camera equipment to pallets of cookies have left my house or factory at some point. Ask questions, share experiences and let us know what you sell and what worked or didn't work. Share photos of your workspace and your packaging too.

Low Cost Luxury Packaging
I've followed Thompson Ferrier (no relation) for years. They're a candle making company in New York, but they don't just make candles. They buy ornaments which can hold their candle wax, turning them into functional pieces of art. Their packaging has always been superb, from a simple sticker on the outside of the shipping box that says get your camera ready for unboxing, to their embossing, ribbons and wax seals. These are a couple of customer photos from Reddit and the YouTube link explains their thinking around packaging in 2023. Remember, if you're starting out - you're not trying to achieve all of this at once, add one element to elevate your packing. Add another element later on and adjust it to appeal to your target audience.

A Peek at the PPMA Show
The Processing and Packaging Machine Association (PPMA) Total show was in Birmingham, England this week. It's an expo of mainly food processing and packaging machines, but it's also typically the biggest machinery available. If your budget is under Β£50k, there's only a few suppliers of interest, but for me it's all about seeing new technology for packaging. I always come away with ideas on how I can improve my own packing and potential suppliers for my own bagging machine. This robot is at the end of a toothpaste production line.

How Major Brands Develop Packaging and How They're Using AI
For most of us, this is a technical level WAY above our needs, but it's an interesting insight into how major brands develop their packaging. They are also integrating their own AI models into the development of packaging for accelerated design and manufacture: https://www.packagingdive.com/news/5-ways-ai-shaping-packaging-research-testing-nestle-colgate-palmolive/759794/ This and more news in my 5 minute read comes out every Friday morning by email.
