๐ŸŽƒ Halloween Prep for Service Dogs-in-Training
Goal: Make Halloween a positive, confidence-building experience! A social, confident dog can be taught to ignore โ€” rebuilding a scared dog is much harder. ๐Ÿพ
Big Ideas:
โœจ Desensitization > Discipline. This is not an obedience exam โ€” itโ€™s a confidence field trip!
๐ŸŽฏ Positive Association. Costumes, masks, noises = treats, praise, fun!
๐Ÿ’ก Avoid Fear Rehearsal. If your dog looks worried, increase distance and make it easier. We do not want โ€œHalloween = scary.โ€
๐Ÿงก Before Halloween:
๐Ÿถ See the spooky stuff early: Visit a dog-friendly store like Loweโ€™s. Donโ€™t activate everything โ€” start far away, let your dog look, mark confidence (curious look, step forward, sniff) and treat!
๐ŸŽญ Costumes at home: Have familiar people wear hats or simple props first, then masks later. Pair each new look with treats and praise.
๐Ÿ”” Doorbell warm-up: Play a soft doorbell sound on your phone; treat for calm. Gradually increase volume. If not ready, silence the real bell for Halloween night.
Have a Halloween Night Game Plan:
๐Ÿก Set the scene for success:
  • For green dogs/puppies, hang out outside (driveway/yard). Fewer doorbell surprises and more space!
  • Keep sessions short (3โ€“5 minutes), then take breaks.
๐Ÿฌ Treat partners: Give trusted, costumed friends a few treats. Ask them to crouch sideways and let your dog choose to approach. Approaches/sniffs = mark & reward!
โžก๏ธ If unsure โ†’ more space: See hesitation? Quietly step back a few feet, reset, and try an easier rep. No forcing greetings.
๐Ÿพ What to Reward vs. What to Redirect:
โœ… Reward: soft eyes, tail neutral/loose, steps toward, sniffing, taking food, curiosity.
๐Ÿšซ Redirect: freeze, lean away, tucked tail, scanning, refusing food. Add distance, breathe, make it easier, then reward the next bit of confidence.
๐Ÿ’ฌ Simple Handler Scripts:
๐Ÿ—ฃ To a friendly neighbor in costume: โ€œSheโ€™s in trainingโ€”could you crouch and offer her this treat? Let her come to you.โ€
๐Ÿงโ€โ™€๏ธ If you need space: โ€œWeโ€™re giving her a little distance while she learnsโ€”thanks!โ€
๐ŸŽ‰ Ending on a win: โ€œLast one, then party!โ€ (Finish with something easy + big praise!)
โš™๏ธ Manage the Environment:
๐Ÿšซ Skip pressing every animatronic button.
๐Ÿ”ฅ Watch cords, candles, inflatables, and candy (chocolate & xylitol hazards!).
๐ŸŒ™ Reflective gear if youโ€™re out after dark.
๐Ÿ’– If you donโ€™t trust the crowd, keep your dog in a quieter area so they stay confident.
๐Ÿงก Bottom Line:
Make โ€œspookyโ€ equal safe, easy, and fun! Celebrate curiosity, keep it short, use distance when needed, and end every session on a positive.
Confidence built tonight spreads to everything else tomorrow. ๐Ÿ•โœจ
