Stretches for After Roller Skating
Lying Knee Rollover Stretch Lie on your back with your knees bent at 90 degrees. Straighten your arms so your upper body and torso make a cross position. Bring your knees to the ground on your left side. You should feel a stretch through your torso. Hold for 30 seconds on each side. Lunge Stretch Start by standing with your hands on your hips. Take a big step forward so that your front knee is at about 90 degrees. Push your hips forward with your torso upright until you feel a stretch in your back hip. Hold for 30 seconds and repeat on the other side. Achilles Box Stretch Stand on the edge of a box or stair. Shift your foot so that your toe is on the box but your heel is off. Lower your weight until you feel a stretch through your calf. Hold for 30 seconds and repeat on the other side. Hamstring Stretch Prop your heel on a chair or other object that’s about knee height. Keep your leg straight and lean forward until you feel a stretch through your hamstring. Hold for 30 seconds and repeat on the other side.
Roller Skating Tips!
Posture - Bend your knees for balance and keep your feet shoulder-width apart - Lean forward slightly. When leaning, think about leaning forward from the waist, not the shoulders - Keep your hands in front of you and low to the ground - Tuck your elbows close to your sides Moving - Keep your skates in a V-shape so that your heels are together and your toes are pointing out - Think about keeping your heels underneath you. If you want to go forward, push the ground away with your heels - If you want to go backwards, push the ground away with your toes - In the beginning, start with small strides. As you get more comfortable, you can increase the distance you glide Stopping - Most skates come with a brake attached to the right heel. Push the brake on your right heel into the ground with firm pressure - Keep the brake forward so that it touches the ground slightly in front of the left toe wheel - The harder you push the brake into the ground, the faster you will stop - Practice stopping from a slow glide until you feel comfortable stopping on command
