Roller Skating Tips!
Posture
  • Bend your knees for balance and keep your feet shoulder-width apart
  • Lean forward slightly. When leaning, think about leaning forward from the waist, not the shoulders
  • Keep your hands in front of you and low to the ground
  • Tuck your elbows close to your sides
Moving
  • Keep your skates in a V-shape so that your heels are together and your toes are pointing out
  • Think about keeping your heels underneath you. If you want to go forward, push the ground away with your heels
  • If you want to go backwards, push the ground away with your toes
  • In the beginning, start with small strides. As you get more comfortable, you can increase the distance you glide
Stopping
  • Most skates come with a brake attached to the right heel. Push the brake on your right heel into the ground with firm pressure
  • Keep the brake forward so that it touches the ground slightly in front of the left toe wheel
  • The harder you push the brake into the ground, the faster you will stop
  • Practice stopping from a slow glide until you feel comfortable stopping on command
