Testing out LLMs for Translation fr English to Spanish
Hey Creators,
<Warning: This is a super duper long post! Grab your beverage of choice before reading>
So, tonight I'm testing the translation capabilities from English to Spanish for Hidden Crowns. I have a native Spanish speaker who asked to read the manuscript before official release because he just couldn't wait. Yes, it's a guy...straight male at that. I'm truly shocked that men are gravitating towards this project as well. That's quite unexpected since I wrote it for the ladies.
So, since he's a native speaker and interested in reading it, I decided to use him as a beta test reader for the Spanish version because I've had so many ladies ask me to release the Spanish language version at the same time I release the English version. But you know The Queen is on a budget and I really didn't want to pay monies to get it translated....so I went to Skye to ask his opinion. Can AI do a decent translation? The answer was Yes, of course. So, I'm only testing 2 chapters to see if that is indeed true.
I read the first one and it actually reads pretty good. BUT I'm not a native speaker; however, I've read 100s of documents in Spanish...for the old job. But those were business documents and not romance novels so I wanted to see if the AI could keep the same emotional feel of the words in the translation. I also decided to go with a LatAm neutral Spanish that they use in telenovellas to make it more universal because there are so many different dialects and I didn't want to make it too colloquial so that any nation in latin america can read it and get it. Spanish from Spain is too formal and different but if they happen to read it they could still understand it.
So we shall see. My beta tester is familiar with the total diaspora including Spain so I lucked out on a good tester. That's a whole other story of how we met. TLTP -too long to post...and you know how I lovvvveee long posts but that would be a book! lol WHICH I have noted for perhaps a Hidden Empires...American Millionaires/Billionaires version. <hint hint> Where is my island already? I just want to be on an island somewhere sipping my fruity cocktail and writing cozy love stories...ah..that's my next dream life. Channeling my inner Barbara Cartland...rest her soul.
But I digress...I started with GPT 4! Ouf, it sucked! I knew I would have to do these in chunks because the AI can't do all 333 pages in one go but I thought I could at least do it chapter by chapter...no can do in GPT 4 because it would only do 2-3 pages at most! And I wanted it to keep everything the same as written only translate the english into spanish...don't rewrite anything or add anything that's not there...and don't translate the arabic endearments. Oh, and it told me it would work on it over nigth and could have the whole 10 pages sometime TOMORROW! WTF! It's 10 pages! GPT 4 SUCKED! I had to use Claude Sonnet 4 and to maintain the formatting as well. Good thing I have a subscription to a multi-modal platform that has both Claude and GPT 4. The multi-modal did it in less than 5 minutes including the same GPT 4 version. So, the limitations is with OpenAI and not the GPT.
I compared the two spanish versions Claude Sonnet 4 and GPT 4-1, the Spanish was exactly the same but Claude Sonnet 4 kept my professional book manuscript formatting better so I have less editing from a formatting perspective using Claude.
Oh...and I get to use 2 covers instead of 1 because I can use a different cover for the Spanish version which is great because I'm literally stuck between choosing out of 4 of them. If I get a thumbs up for the Spanish version then I can probably do a French version as well...using 3 of the covers! LOL
