I’m giving myself permission
to ask for what I desire.
Attempting to put in the work
towards that end.
Simply because—
I’m not aging backward.
Rewind.
I’m trying to think.
Take a step.
I don’t want to be as a dog
who returns to their own vomit.
Because Lot’s wife looked back
and we know where that got her.
That’s all I can think of.
When you reach a certain point in life,
you realize you took opportunities
for granted.
Whether out of fear or simple procrastination—
time is not going to pause,
like a cassette player—
to allow you to rewind
so you can capture the lyrics of a song,
in order to copy the words and sing along.
In a perfect world—perhaps.
But this isn’t a perfect world.
No pausing allowed.
I don’t know where I’m going
with this poem.
I need it to make sense.
I need to land my plane.
I started, got midway—
then turned back.
Where do I go from there?
Recovering an opportunity
is never an option—
chances just become obsolete.
So at this stage, there’s an urgency.
I have to pee.
Damn bladder. Look…
The toilet is only ten steps away.
No need to run down my leg. Chill.
I press my legs together
and pray that it hears me.
What am I doing?
I thought I was going one way—
then I ended up somewhere else.
What am I doing? Changing direction.
What am I doing, exactly?
I’m trying not to repeat things.
(I don’t want to use a line
I already used in other poems.)
Maybe this is why I can’t get things
accomplished.
Maybe I should give myself permission
to not be perfect.
