Live Lesson - 04/10/26
First off, I apologize for not doing a live lesson yesterday. I lost track of what was needed to be done and forgot. This one is about openings and having something that will atract (hook) the reader. I hope you enjoy it. Let's go!

@Zane Dowling I didn't intentionally make a pun 😂 I don't even know what you're referring to!
Keep the fire burning.
Sometimes you have to think back to the reason your doing something to get that fires stoked up a little. I want to help you do that by asking you to comment what it was that solidified your resolve to become a writer so much that you started and finished your first project. I'll start. I kind of fell in love with the idea of becoming a writer when I took writing 101 in college and got an A- on my term paper. That was quite an accomplishment for someone who got downgraded from Proper English to Reading English in Senior High School. I dabbled in starting a story or two for years after that but I think what really got me started on my first book was reading a book that was interesting but had some issues. I remember distinctly thinking. I could write a book as good as this. Not long after that I wrote my first book because I was hopeful of making some extra money when it published. Well that was being overly optimistic and several rejection letters later I laid it down for several years until a friend told me I should try self publishing on Amazon. Let me shorten this by saying I am still hopeful of getting a real agent or publisher to accept it and am working on getting it in better shape for that day. What's your genesis story?

I never thought I "had a novel in me" but during COVID, I randomly started writing poetry, one of which morphed into a flash fiction piece (which I published online). Then I accidentally came across the book "No Plot, No Problem" by Chris Baty (founder of NaNoWriMo). Not having a plot idea was why I thought I couldn't write a novel, so that book inspired me to do my own private NaNoWriMo, which I did — 50,000+ words first draft in one month. It was great fun! I decided to ditch that novel and not revise it, but by that point, I'd been bitten by the novel-writing bug and wrote a second one. Now working on the third.

So true! Gotta keep that high falutin' language to a minimum 😂 But I'm totally with you with liking to expand my vocabulary. A really excellent writer is sometimes able to get the reader to understand a new word just by the context it appears in.
Help me help you help me while helping you
I have been trying to inspire involvement in the community by offering to do a Live Lesson/editing session where I use one of your problem areas or your stories as an editing example. This is an opportunity to get a free one on one with me that I would record as one of my daily Live Lessons. Come on, don't be shy. Simply comment that you are willing and I will DM you to set it up for a day/time of your choice. Help me and the community by letting me help you.

This is a kind offer! Getting feedback is so important for writers! I run an in-person group where we give each other feedback. I hope some writers in the group take you up on your offer if they don't already have a critique group! I'm assuming they can keep their writing anonymous if they're shy?

I had a short story published in an anthology by a traditional small press. Still working on getting an agent for my novel!
