Training for cry
When going for the shape, I start feeling this muscle strain in the throat. Am I trying way too hard / doing something wrong, or just having those specific weak muscles ๐Ÿ˜…. Some background to my singing journey: I've been practicing distortion for the past two years semi regularly. Lately I have finally been able to make all sort of great sounding distorted sounds which feel good while singing. The issue still is that I seem to her a bit hoarse due to thick mucus about half an hour after distorted singing even if the singing feels relaxed and not too pushed. I still feel like I need to somewhat push for the initial distorted coordination but am able to relax once I've found it. I am hoping that this "if you feel like you need to push, cry more instead" approach could solve this!๐Ÿค˜

Here are my demonstration for the cry and distortion. It feels for me that it is easier to get to the distortion without pushing if I start from the smokers voice instead of singing but I tried both approaches. I purposely did not tweak the sound color here but let the distortion happen how it would naturally.

@Draven Grey thanks for the reply! I've noticed there is some tension to what I was doing in the video clips. When doing the distortion exercises a bit longer, I feel like I can change the way the distortion happens and it feels a lot more relaxed, more like letting go than forcing into it. Also once this happens, I seem to be able to transition seamlessly from distorted singing to "atonal" screams and back. This feels like the less compressed shape that you mentioned. I think you have made a distinction between the compressed distortion and this "fry" distortion. Is the difference to use false folds to hold back air for compression, or add the "witches cackle/fry" over clean tone?
