Craziest room I’ve ever worked in
Dudes, I’m in Toronto right now on a gig, and you won’t believe the sound of the main ballroom. I wanted to get a video to show you guys, but we ran late with setup and had to leave right after. Tomorrow before the event, I’ll take a video and show you how insane this room is. (Cool, but not cool for sound guys!!!!) I’ll love to hear your opinions on what you’d do with a room that’s as live as this one. I’ve never worked in such a sonic mess before. It’s like a big dome, everything slaps back and there’s phase cancelation everywhere (with no speakers!). This is wild. I’ll share more tomorrow morning!

Someone once said, in an echoey room, add a lot of reverb to background music before the band plays and by the time they go on they will sound dry in comparison.
Live mix at side of the stage
I sometimes see sound guys doing a live mix at the side of the stage. How can this possibly sound good? I would think that what the audience hears is a combination of live sound from instruments and guitar amps and PA speakers. How can someone possibly mix for good sound at the side when their perception of sound could be drastically different? I once attended a small concert where the sound guy was very close to the front of the stage and he had headphones on the whole time. It was loud and shrill and the worst thing I ever heard, especially knowing how good the place can sound. Isn't it obviously wrong to mix a show from anywhere other than the audience?

That makes total sense. So I'm not sure what guys are thinking when they mix on the side all alone. Next time I see this I will tell them to smarten up and take your course.
Hello yall!
Hey yall, I’m Jason and I’m a High School student in Grade 11 and I’m currently doing sound for my schools musical theatre program! I’m planning on going into physics after school, as well as making a bit of music on the side, and I still would like to learn more about audio to keep all of my doors open!

If you have brains maybe try hard for some kind of science or engineering career instead of sound or music LOL!
Q & A Replay
Hey! Well, that was our first live Q&A with Sound Guy 101. What a turnout!!! We had 1 amazing member join us today...... okay it was just me. But in this video I cover some common live sound questions, I give you a bit of backstory on my live sound journey, and we get into some detail about feedback, and digital vs analog mixers. Feel free to leave your questions here for next time, I'd love to help anyone with any problems you've been having. We're going to do a live Q&A every 2 weeks on Tuesday at 12PM. Make sure to mark it in your calendar, I want to meet all you amazing engineers, and aspiring sound guys!

I'd love to see the next one but after-work hours would be better.
Sound guy job sounds great, but...
I started off reading audiophile magazines in high-school and that turned into a 25 year long career of installing custom home audio video system with home automation. It's been fun but in another life I think it would have been more fun to be a live sound guy or some sort of recording/production engineer. I love working on my hobby channel "Full On Sessions". Maybe I'll start of with a question/comment. What concerns me about live sound is the loud volume you often have to deal with. A lot of people take pride in high volume but there are times when I'm at a live concert and the sound is too excruciating and it ruins the show for me. Are live sound guys concerned about hearing loss and how is that going to affect your perception of sound in the long run? I would think the quality of your hearing is a real asset. I wonder why some concerts sound so bad - is it because the sound guy is half deaf?? lol

@Dominik Joswig I saw Tool once. But I didn't see Maynard. He had his back turned to the crowd the entire show!
