That crazy room
Heyo. I shared this on instagram, but since I was hyping it up over here Iāll show you guys too. Really wild experience. We ended up using 7 speakers for the mains. In a super live room like this, the key is get as much speaker coverage as you can (while being cautious of placement to avoid comb filtering). I ended up getting a really good sound; The audience heard every word. I attribute that somewhat to proper gain staging and EQ, but the most important factor was the amount of speakers used, and the placement of the speakers. Hope you find this interesting!

Craziest room Iāve ever worked in
Dudes, Iām in Toronto right now on a gig, and you wonāt believe the sound of the main ballroom. I wanted to get a video to show you guys, but we ran late with setup and had to leave right after. Tomorrow before the event, Iāll take a video and show you how insane this room is. (Cool, but not cool for sound guys!!!!) Iāll love to hear your opinions on what youād do with a room thatās as live as this one. Iāve never worked in such a sonic mess before. Itās like a big dome, everything slaps back and thereās phase cancelation everywhere (with no speakers!). This is wild. Iāll share more tomorrow morning!

This is a quick sneak peek of the room. Look at these super high, dome ceilings. I canāt walk around and make noise right now, but when the event is done Iāll show you guys what this monstrosity sounds like. Stay tuned

Live mix at side of the stage
I sometimes see sound guys doing a live mix at the side of the stage. How can this possibly sound good? I would think that what the audience hears is a combination of live sound from instruments and guitar amps and PA speakers. How can someone possibly mix for good sound at the side when their perception of sound could be drastically different? I once attended a small concert where the sound guy was very close to the front of the stage and he had headphones on the whole time. It was loud and shrill and the worst thing I ever heard, especially knowing how good the place can sound. Isn't it obviously wrong to mix a show from anywhere other than the audience?

Yeah, this is definitely a thing. If thereās amps and drums on the stage, putting on headphones or mixing behind the speakers is NOT effective. Headphones are useful for honing in on fine details, but you gotta hear what the crowd is hearing. Even if the mixer isnāt in the crowd. Sometimes that means using an iPad to control the mixer, or sometimes just walking out in front of the speakers and listening. If youāre a monitor engineer, thatās totally different. Youāre at the side of the stage so you can communicate with the band to fix their wedges or IEMs. But you better also have someone in FOH whoās making sure the sound is getting off the stage properly!!

@Youssef El-Kirate yeah! A monitoring engineer is just like a regular sound guy, except he only operates the sound for the musicians monitors on stage.
