Beginner's Sewing Course STEP 2 - Fabric 🤩
SEWING = FABRIC OBESSIONS🤩 But should it? When I started sewing I was obsessed with buying fabric. I would go to discount fabric stores and leave with enormous bags full of any fabric I could find... What a HUGE MISTAKE 🙄 Almost ten years down the line and I am STILL stuck with pieces of fabric I would never buy today. I made two mistakes: 1. Not understanding that there are different kinds of fabric and how they are used when sewing 2. Not knowing what kinds of fabric I like (not just what was on sale or what looked pretty) YOUR NEXT TASK: Take a few minutes and learn a little about fabric. In the classroom you will find these videos all about a fabric: QUICK LESSONS: ▶️ Fabric Basics : stretchy and non-stretchy fabric ▶️ What is grainline and bias??? DEEPER LESSONS (if you like understanding WHY fabric has a certain name, description and use) ▶️ Fabric Deep-Dive Masterclass Don't forget to download the FABRIC GUIDE in the downloads section. It has lists of fabric and how to work with each type: 📩 FABRIC GUIDE PDF DOWNLOAD +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ WHAT FABRIC DO I NEED FOR THE LOUNGE SHORTS? For this project you will need: - non-stretchy fabric (called woven fabric) that isn't too thick i.e "medium weight" - think of Pajama bottoms when choosing the fabric: does this feel like something kind-of sturdy but not as thick as jeans? And not as thin as silky pyjamas? - an old sheet is a great start! - Fabric suggestions: flannel , cotton , chambray

I have made tissue pouches for gifts and also for charity. They are quick and easy and use minimal material.

@Suan Landman I wish I had the oomph to sort out my sewing room.
Day 2 : Sewing 101
If you missed Day 1, you can catch up here. (←click). We're going through the beginner's sewing course together. New tasks are posted every 3 days, and we'll sew a project together once everyone has complete task 2 (day 2). Task 2 : Your next task is to build some confidence in front of your sewing machine! Before we dive into a project, give yourself a chance to warm up and see how your machine is behaving. Practicing a few stitches helps you spot (and fix) issues early. Not sure what all those functions and stitches mean? Find the Machine Functions + Stitches video with downloadable PDFs HERE >>>MACHINE FUNCTIONS AND STITCHES<<< Most “machine problems” are usually one of these: - Incorrect threading - Wrong or blunt needle - Dust and lint build-up ❎Tension is rarely the true culprit, but if you need to adjust it slightly, I’ve added a tension video for you to watch. >>>SEWING MACHINE TENSION<<< ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ 🌱 HOW to practice? You can print the PDF stitch practice sheets if you like, but I recommend using fabric scraps. Fabric moves and behaves like the real thing — paper doesn’t. Use a contrasting thread so you can see what’s going on. And if you’re nervous about sewing straight, I’ve added a video with tips. Our free Sewing 101 course kicks off this Friday, and I’m so excited to get started with you. 🧵 - I’ll post a new mini task every 3 days from the course I have used to teach 100s of beginners to sew. This makes it very doable, even if life gets busy. - You don’t have to do it perfectly or on schedule - Each task will have a check-in. Share your progress or a photo in the community to help you stay motivated, and show other members it's possible! - By the end, you’ll have a finished project in your hands! - But first — we need to pick what we’re making together. Here are the options: (Please vote for a project you'd like to sew)
