Don’t be a Mouth Breather!
Did you know…….the way you breathe can send signals to your nervous system all day long? When we breathe through our mouth, especially as our default way of breathing, our body can interpret it as a sign that something isn’t quite right. It’s like a little alarm bell saying: “Something’s happening… be ready.” Heart rate can increase, blood pressure can rise, and we can spend more time hanging out in that fight-or-flight state. And the crazy thing is, around 30–50% of adults are thought to mouth breathe by default. That’s a lot of nervous systems spending their days with the stress switch slightly turned on. So what’s so special about your NOSE?!! 👃✨ Well, your nose is actually an incredible piece of kit. It warms, filters, and moisturises the air before it reaches your lungs. It also adds nitric oxide – a gas that helps open the airways and supports the body’s natural defences. Nasal breathing naturally slows your breathing down, which helps activate your parasympathetic nervous system – your “rest and digest” state. And here’s the really fascinating bit… Your nose creates resistance. Normally resistance sounds like something we want to avoid, but with breathing, it’s a good thing. The tiny hairs filter the air, and the turbinates (the little seashell-shaped structures inside your nose) create just enough resistance to slow the flow of air. This helps create better pressure in the lungs, supports more efficient oxygen exchange, and keeps your breathing muscles working well. In simple terms: Your nose helps your body get the most out of every breath. So let’s give your nose a little appreciation today… Try this 1-minute reset: ✨ Sit or lie comfortably✨ Close your eyes if you like✨ Breathe in through your nose for a count of 5✨ Feel the air being warmed and filtered✨ Breathe out through your nose for a count of 5 Repeat for 5 rounds. Then pause and notice… Do you feel a little calmer?A little more grounded?A little more present? Your breath is always communicating with your nervous system.
