When Purpose Gets Clarified
I read a post this morning about someone I knew, he was a founder, a healer, a man still doing meaningful work, gone at 65. And the question hit me hard: If I only had a few years left, would I still do this? The answer surprised me with how fast it came. Yes. Because families are still struggling in ways they shouldn’t have to. What would your answer be if you asked yourself that question honestly?

I retired after 38 years in the US Army in 2021. I tried the government contractor pathway and only lasted 6 months before I realized that there was no way I could work for an ineffective and inefficient organization any more. I left the US for Thailand to decompress and get my head together and found out that everything got better in a very relaxing and peaceful environment. My father’s health , also a service-connected disabled veteran began to spiral downward in 2024, so I went to the US to help him navigate the Department of Veterans Affairs primary healthcare system so he and my mother and sister who were taking care of him at home, could have an easier life and improved quality of life. I discovered that the VA Primary Healthcare System in the US was a farce and almost as bad and non existent as it is abroad. Unfortunately, my father passed away under hospice care in our living room. He was in constant pain and in and out of mental clarity. During one moment of clarity, he asked me to promise to do something about how ineffective the system is so other heroes and families didn’t have to suffer the same fate. I promised that I would come out of retirement and put my skills to developing a better version of the system, but I limited my timeframe to 3 years because I know there are a lot of barriers to improving systems that don’t want to change. I founded the Veterans Future Wellness Center and here I am. I am in year two and on the verge of becoming investor ready (IR). Getting funding for a startup business is tough and the difficulty increases when you want to operate abroad, even when the client population is American service-connected disabled veterans. Our government has established a reputation for being troublesome clients. Although the payment is 90% guaranteed, there’s a 6 month delay for review and processing. I have ironed out all of the problems and developed a solution, but fundraising is my last hurdle. I haven’t given up and still have time so I will fight on.
