Hey all. My name is Tim Johnson and I manage Powershift Inc. in Denver, CO. We are a specialized shop that rebuilds/remanufactures heavy equipment, industrial, and oil field transmissions. (Allison, CATERPILLAR, Clark, Funk, Twin Disc, ZF, etc.) Most mechanics we have hired come from other markets: automotive, airline, or engine rebuilders. For the most part, they have mechinical skills but also have ingrained habits/processes that do not necessarily work for our shop. We recently hired a friend of a friend who had rebuilt transmissions in the automotive market for 19 years. He turned out to be great find. He is always excited to learn something new and never tells you how it was done at his past job. At 51, he is our youngest employee and I have several rebuilders approaching retirement. We are now researching ways to entice and properly hire a younger set of rebuilder/mechanics.
