Airlayering ficus Nerifolia
Hi all! I have a willow leaf fig that I want to airlayer, the top of the tree has some inverse taper that would create an amazing base for a new tree. When is the best time of the year to do this work? Thanks!

Hi Daniel, airlayers are usually done from spring, giving the tree maximum time and most favorable conditions to grow leaves, which aids the formation of callus and new roots. Would I do it now? Yes, still enough time left in the season(3-4 months).
You’re White Pine bonsai
After watching the white pine video I decided to have a go myself. This cultivar is Pinus Parvifolia “Negishi”, cost £27 and is probably 3 year old. It has a graft but it was the best of what was on offer. I’d love to hear your thoughts on what the next steps should be and see some examples of you’re early development white pines. Kind regards Dan

Hi Daniel, Fantastic attempt at styling this white pine. Getting rid of the original apex was a good idea to introduce taper and add potential branches to an otherwise branchless section. I have attached two angle changes to introduce a bit more flow and directionality to the design. In both cases the apex can be brought up a bit. The rest of the tree can be grown from smaller, closer branches.

The ugly pine
Hi! The last video featured a white pine with a graft and showed the approach Tien would follow at the nursery. As he says us beginners are scared to chop our little precious trees. This is what I did with mine, i'd love some feedback and advice on next steps keep improving it. In the link below there are images of the tree before the last lot of work. https://youtube.com/shorts/QbqGs9UgMwI?si=-ww487mLjhvvQfBC

Looks good!! The needles can be thinned out a little, leaving 5-6 pairs. The next step will be working on refining the branch structures.
Fertilizer
When I attended the Bonsai workshop, the lecturer told me that if my Bonsai starts budding 4 weeks after repotting it, then I should use some fertilizer. Was he talking about the Chinese Juniper or the Maple tree?

Once new growth can be seen, it’d often safe and appropriate to feed the tree. I don’t see a difference in terms of the species, junipers or maples, can be fed after seeing good new growth.

Hi razvan, You are absolutely correct in terms of the impact of feeding has on the internode distance. We generally do not feed our trees in early spring, only apply after all the spring new growth have hardened off, so the fertilizers do not add to the “unwanted” long internodes which will only be cut off.
