Melting clay - advice needed
Can anyone give me some advice? I've just taken this piece out of the kiln but its melted! If was a shallow dish when it went in but has sunk during firing any I'm unsure why. It was placed right at the top of the kiln (1.5cm from the lid) and the kiln fired to cone 5 (according to the witness cones. The clay is a stoneware buff with a temperature range of 1100-1290C so it shouldn't be melting. I'm really confused.

Hi Mark. I wonder... do you use witness/Pyro cones? Do you place them on every shelf? I wonder if the combination of proximity to the lid bricks caused overfiring/heartwork on your top level? I wonder if another potter might join in to discuss how close the top shelf should be [minimum distance]. I was taught to place shorter items near the bottom level, with at least 2 elements showing for each shelf, then move to taller pieces as you move up in the kiln.

@Mark Keeling that's a challenge for sure, fitting items into a kiln when you have more pieces you're dying to get fired. I'm so sorry it happened to you.

Some more screen printing on my pottery using Amaco Inks💕I’m loving using the Mayco Mesh Screen Printing with the Amaco Inks - it’s so amazing how they can be reused- just wash the ink of after use - I really love them ❤️

Stunning results!
Color
After watching Diana and Shane’s YouTube video today on color, I thought these pictures fit their discussion perfectly. The first two were Natalie Warren’s’ booth at the ceramic show over the weekend. And another whose name I don’t know. The picture at the end was a lady with a basket of snacks for all of us. What I saw were the red packets and couldn’t figure out why she had packets of catsup! They weren’t 😵‍💫

Color color color! And what a variety of ceramics, too. The sweet lady with the snacks looks so happy and welcoming. I hope you grabbed a snack once you realized they were not catsup packets, 🤣

We made it to the ocean!
We made it to Morro Bay, CA yesterday and there was a kite festival going on. So fun! Today we turned right and are heading north up the west coast! 🌊🥳 I found these adorable mugs in a boutique and love the spoons in the handle. And how cute is the candle holder?!? Added to the list of things to try! 🙂

Let’s help her channel grow
Many of you already know Alaina from here in our group. She has been a faithful follower of my channel since the beginning. She always comments. She does the most exquisite low fire pieces❤️. She has been struggling to get a high fire kiln up and running but it looks like that will take a while longer and I know this is frustrating and discouraging for her. I know that she currently has 721 subscribers so it would be wonderful if we could help her feel loved and appreciated. If you haven’t subscribed, please subscribe. If you have, she just had a kiln opening a day ago. Let’s flood her channel with many positive comments. We need to remember to nourish one another. https://youtube.com/@laneyscraftingcreations431?si=Yj5BaLY10Bw2Zcs6
