https://open.spotify.com/episode/6LulVGVIoGakr2g8kmfJ9a?si=RqZsZT4eQpSRoOHxm47NqA In this episode, I got to connect with the amazing Tana Yonas, also known as DJ Passionfruit — a music selector, educator, writer, researcher, and global explorer of sound. From Ethiopia to LA, Mexico City to Tokyo, Tana’s journey moves through cultures, languages, record stores, and deep musical lineages. We talk about home, heritage, cities you can hear before you arrive, analog culture, the magic of taxi radios around the world, and how music becomes a passport — a way to travel, learn, and remember. We also dig into Freedom Frequencies, Tana’s video series; her family’s intergenerational connection to music, film, and documentation; and why Arabic poetry moves her so much. An analog evangelist extraordinaire, Tana will have you logging off and tuning in. @passionfruit.wav Join Languages through Music on Skool! Looking forward to listening!
Welcome to Languages through Music Skool!
Hey LTM fam! Thanks so much for joining. I'm trying out this platform (700+ masterclass students in!) because Squarespace seems to be lacking on community vibe and the calendar function. I'd like people to be able connect via languages they are learning, sharing resources or favourite tunes with ease. I'm not a hi-tech person, I'm a language & teacher person 😅 so please humour me while we build this new and friendlier platform together. It's a constantly evolving process- from classrooms to festivals, to Udemy, to Squarespace- and now here! I might keep content on my website for now, and just offer this to people who want that extra community support- no one wants another Facebook or LinkedIn group in their lives, right? Tell us- your name, where you are in the world 🌍, which languages you speak. are learning 🗣, and your favourite music/artists to listen to 🎶! I'll go first: 👋🏽 Desta! 🇬🇧 London! 🌳I speak English, French, Portuguese, Spanish pretty well 🥣 My Thai, Turkish, Tigrinya is a bit flakey. 🧞‍♀️My dream is to get good in those three, plus Amharic, Swahili, Kirundi, Mandarin, Japanese! 🇧🇷I'm a huge fan of Brazilian music- Djavan, Gilberto Gil, Milton Nascimento, Tim Maia...

I grew up disconnected from my roots. Today, I help others reconnect to their heritage, own their story, and pass it on with confidence.
