Today, I started with five minutes of Ujjayi breathing as a preparation for an O2 table: Breathing / Dive 1:00 / 1:00 (easy) 1:00 / 1:12 (easy) 1:00 / 1:24 (easy) 1:00 / 1:36 (first contractions around 1 minute) 1:00 / 1:48 (little harder) 1:00 / 2:00 (tough round, I could hardly calm my mind from 56 seconds on) Two minutes observing the breath afterwards.

I haven’t done any breath-holding exercises for two days. Instead, I completed both my cycle ride and today’s morning running session using the 2:3 breathing technique. I breathed in for two double steps or pedal strokes and breathed out for three double steps or pedal strokes. Both sessions lasted 45 minutes, and I was able to maintain this breathing technique for around 80 per cent of the time. When it got more strenuous, I switched to a 1:1 ratio and exhaled through pursed lips.

I did today’s breathing exercise after my afternoon nap. I followed @Edward Brittain’s advice and, after each dive, took five recovery breaths before starting the warm-up breaths again. 1:23 - inhale dive 1 1:15 - five slow passive recovery breaths 2:33 - ten active warm-up breaths 2:15 - inhale dive 2 1:21 - five slow passive recovery breaths 2:57 - ten active warm-up breaths 3:01 - inhale dive 3 1:22 - five slow passive recovery breaths Observing my breath for 2-3 minutes afterwards. That felt very grounding and relaxing.

@Phillip de Bruyn I hope so, Phillip. I missed it a lot and especially in the past busy times, it probably could have been the support I needed. But great to be back. 😃

@Phillip de Bruyn thanks for this advice, Phillip. I'm used to add some breathing exercises during my running or bike rides, but haven't thought about doing a dive after workouts. I will give it a try more often.

Do you know what it is? … … If you guessed breath holding, you got it right! Breath holding (intermittent hypoxia training) holds tremendous benefits! Science is slowly catching up to the untapped potential of breath holding. Freedivers, like Stig, have been invaluable guinea pigs in demonstrating that the human body is far more capable than imagined, and the results of longer & long term holds. This opened the doorway to interest in studying the benefits of hypoxia & hypercapnia tolerance (resistance to low oxygen and high carbon dioxide levels). The first results have been promising, with studies in mice showing a protective potential in old age, one of the key indicators of a long and healthy life (see first comment for link to study). So… The question is… How long can you hold your breath?
