You're Not Imagining It
If you've ever said the word "accessibility" in a meeting and felt that moment of uncomfortable silence before someone jumps in with "yes, of course that matters," and then watched the conversation move on exactly as if you'd said nothing, you're not imagining it. You're not bad at your job. You're not explaining it wrong. You're watching form win over function, again, and that's exhausting no matter how good your slides are. Being tired of that isn't a sign you should stop. It's a sign you've been doing this alone for too long. If this is you, say so below. Let's find out how many of us there really are.

Definitely been in those conversations in the past and also in my new job! Fortunately though, I think the attitude to accessibility and inclusion is changing at my new employer. Traditionally, they have been a very 'engineer led' business, with little focus on User Experience and Design. Recently, customers have started demanding more from the software, not just features (Which IFS would happily keep adding) but how it feels to use. This has become an issue for the engineers as often they aren't equipped to think like a user. This has now opened the door for UX / Product Design teams to bring their experience and expertise to help improve the customer experience across the board.

Hello! I'm Stu - I'm based in (occasionally sunny) Manchester, UK. I'm curious to learn more about how to bring accessibility and inclusion to the complex apps I'm now designing at IFS. Many of our customers are in the Aerospace, Defence and Engineering industries so very tech heavy, but still with a human being in the mix.
