It took me a while to realize something that now feels obvious: Mowing the lawn isn’t just about mowing the lawn. It’s about getting paid too. There are two parts to the job: Do the work. Make sure you get paid. And if you only focus on the first part, hoping the second will just happen then...​ you’re leaving the most important part up to chance. I used to give people a lot of leeway. Some paid on time. Some paid the day before the next cut. Some… didn’t pay at all. So I set a rule: ​Everbody that not on a monthy account pays within 24 hours (90% of our clients)​ Anything beyond that? Time to shake a few trees We started texting invoices the same night the job was done. ​Payment due in 24 hours.​ If it’s late, we follow up, kindly but firmly every few days. Turns out, most people pay on time when they know that you are a squeeky wheel. And the ones who don’t? Eventually, they get tired of a the reminder texts and leave, and by then, we’re not sad to see them go. There are plenty of good paying clients out there. We turned up. We did the job.
