So happy to find this community!
We’ve been frustrated with our tax situation because we’re so new to the STR business and we’re such a small entity. Our tax prep/CPA folks are more accustomed to larger companies and seem to have no experience with STR owners. We don’t really fit their mold and it’s a challenge for us to understand tax strategies. It makes us feel confused and we’re unsure if we’re getting all the tax breaks we’re entitled to. Looking forward to learning and saving with all of you folks who are in similar situations and with experts who know this business!

@Mark Rich California. Our short-term rental is in Palm Springs and medium-term rental is in our backyard in San Jose.

- Why do you want to save money on taxes? Not just “to save money” — but what does that money mean for your life? - Where are you right now in your journey? Just starting out? Own rentals? Flipping or doing STRs? - What’s your #1 challenge right now — your “big domino”? The one thing that would make everything else easier?

Hi all! 1. TAXES - We want to save money on taxes because my partner is retiring soon and I’d like to be able to retire early so we can be in retirement together. Also, we have one kid who graduated college, one kid in Jr. college (so zero college expenses for us), and one who will be in college in 2 years, so saving money would be helpful for all of that! 2. JOURNEY - We have a medium-term rental (28-day minimum stay) “Inlaw Unit” in our backyard in San Jose, CA and a short-term rental in Palm Springs, CA. We’d like to eventually invest in a 2 or 3 unit building in Brooklyn, NY where our son lives and works now with the idea of him occupying 1 unit and managing the rental of the others either as long-term rentals or medium-term rentals. (Son is an architect/fabricator.) 3. CHALLENGE - Figuring out if we can afford to expand our property investments and still live within our means, especially with one or both of us retiring soon and our oldest being early in his career. Or should we just stop where we are with 2 rentals?
