tax filing for minor dependents
Our kids had unearned income more than $1350 (dividends, short and long term capital gains). Since they need to file a tax return, what is the better approach? A) to file an extension for them and include them in our (parents) filing with form 8814? or B) just separately file it now? @Ryan Bakke, CPA @Mason Kimball, CPA @Kevin Medina, CPA, MBA
Hi Cristina! The first $1,350 is tax-free and the next $1,350 is taxed at 10% either way. The difference is after $2,700, Form 8814 puts that income on your return and increases your AGI, while filing separately keeps it on the child’s return and off your AGI. Depending on the dollar amount, option B might the be better choice.
Real Estate Property Taxes
I just paid my real estate property taxes to take advantage of the 4% early payment discount (deadline is 11/30 in many counties). If you own real estate property, this is a good time to double-check your tax notice and see if your county offers a similar early-pay discount. It’s an easy way to save money with zero extra work.

@Rini Triastuti Typical Texas counties that do offer a discount: - Bexar County (San Antonio): Usually 1–3% if paid in November - El Paso County: Early pay discounts apply - Jefferson County - Hidalgo County Check your county tax assessor’s website and look for: - “Early Payment Discount” - “November Discount” - or “Prepayment Option
