Meetup at The Guitar Show (UK) this Saturday 2nd March
What's good! myself and @Slater Bailey are heading to the guitar show this weekend in Birmingham. There's lots of bass exhibitors too so it will be a cool hang so if anyone is already going or wants to go let us know, it would be great to see some faces there! You can find out more or get tickets here: https://www.theguitarshow.co.uk/

What's Your Practice Routine?
If you had 1 hour per day, how would you break down your practice routine? I'm keen to pick up some wisdom from this group to get better with using my time more deliberately. I'll go first... Most days I will aim for... 25mins - Timing, scales, arpeggios, modes, chords (playing over a click and drone at various speeds) 25mins - Work through jazz standards course (my current project!) 10mins - Play through / memorise the upcoming Sunday worship setlist Again this is ideally what I aim for... but sometimes it can look more like this... 50mins - Rearrange & tinker with sounds on my pedal board 10min - Play the same slap song over and over ๐Ÿ˜…

Hey Simon, I usually practice my arpeggios and modes to a metronome for a few mins and practice sight reading then I just focus on learning the songs I gotta learn for the week and I do need to spend more time on ireal to practice some jazz

@Simon Farmilo I would say learning to read music has helped me to understand rhythm more and whenever I get sent a lot of songs in a short space of time it helps me to remember how the notes are played, because I can know the notes to a song but I can forget how the notes are played
CHALLENGE
I started something at the end of last year and some of you might find this useful. I started recording chunks of my practice and uploading it to the internet like a fool ๐Ÿ˜‚ Couple of reasons: โ€ข It's building a digital practice log that future me can look back at my progress โ€ข I'm going to push myself to be better as it's in the public domain โ€ข It will help grow and build a community of bassists that will push each other further โ€ข I have a baby on the way so will not be pushing for touring or a lot of abroad work this coming summer Too often we only see the polished, 12th take insta version so I'm taking one for the team lol... but 6 months to a year from now ๐Ÿ‘€ Well I guess we'll come back to this post and see if any progress was made. But here I'm working on getting more melodic minor and 'out there' spacey sounds into my playing with upper structures just over cantaloupe island. WARTS and all! Thinking dorian or melodic minor of the Fm7, Mixolydian or lydian dominant over the Db7 (Ab melodic minor) and dorian or melodic minor over the Dm7 Drop a video of you playing over the changes in the VIDEO SUBMISSIONS category. If you do it in the main chat I'll have to take it down and ask you to re-upload it in the right place. There's a chord chart and backing track attached to this post. You can just hold down the bass or go for it! We'll use this to see progress over the next coming months.

Introduce Yourself!
Hey everyone, So excited to have you here. I'm Caleb and grew up playing bass in church but had no one to teach me & was self taught by force. Often we wear self taught as a badge of honour but it's not until I went to uni that I realised how limiting that was for me. Long story short, did my music degree & had a career as a professional bassist in TV, Film, The West End and session work. Now I teach on a music degree course and want to build a community to bring that level of education to people looking to play in church so you don't have to do it the hard way. Letโ€™s learn from each other and letโ€™s shed ๐Ÿ‘€ Please start by saying hi and introducing yourself below in the comments and let us know how long you've been playing & where you're based. Oh and also, this community is going to reach a wide range of people from different cultures, countries, communities and walks of life so be respectful with everyone and stick to talking about playing bass in church. Any ferocious doctrine or cultural debates will have you removed as that takes away from what this is for - helping people learn to play bass & serve better in churches.

@Samuel Lisboa welcome bro
Happy Sunday Family
What are you pushing for this year with your playing? I know many of you will have services this morning, but this year 2024 letโ€™s push to raise the bar and play with excellence. Knowing that our role is more than good grooves and tasty licks but actually to help people into worship and usher in the presence of God ๐Ÿ”ฅ Iโ€™m really looking to disappear for a bit from making โ€˜contentโ€™ and prioritise real practice again. Want to get some Hadrien vocab under my hands and get more flow this year. What are you working towards with your playing this year?

This year I want to work on soloing a bit more so I can be more expressive and be more comfortable around the whole entire fretboard and i also want to step up my game on synth bass, I feel like Iโ€™m lacking on synth bass I only pick it up when I have synth bass songs to learn ๐Ÿ˜‚
