I started teaching Professional Speaking to my Business Development entrepreneur clients after Tommy Hopkins had his advance team asked me to promote his event. They gave me free tickets for helping them and while I was at the event I realized we had as much talent in the San Francisco Bay Area and they should be on stage. Right about the same time, I saw an article that the IRS tracked people over various industries and they found those who speak in their community earned an average of 25% more than those who don't. So I created a course, SpeakEasy, and it was full in no time at all. I got them to break in their skills and content at the "Animal Circuit" (Rotary, Lions, Kiwanis Clubs). Interestingly enough, all of them averaged three referrals for additional speaking gigs and at least one or two new clients. One of my clients ended up getting booked for an internet marketing convention in Dallas and while there was booked for an event in England where he made $80,000 in one weekend and he didn't even have a product! When we start out to become a speaker, (I was kicking and screaming, "Not me!" because I grew up stuttering) we rarely end up with what we expect. I have been so priviledged to speak on major stages with the big names, on cruises (my favorite gig) and even with professional sports teams! I attended no less than six speaking programs all over the country, by those who had much more experience than I did, I attended every event when the big name speakers came to the SF Bay Area and I watched and learned from each one! I learned how to be more engaging, speak directly to the concerns of the audience (by showing up early and asking questions) and how to put my fears aside for the greater good of inspiring the audience. Speaking Professionally is a priviledge and an amazing gift! The next step for me is to speak to inspire people to step up and do something to help the 700,000 children living on the streets in the US who have no adult to provide or protect them. My project will take 2,000 of these kids a year to Belize for a high school/trade school program. I haven't found any stages yet but I've done over a hundred interviews and maybe one day I'll do a Ted Talk!
