@Drew Brania I think the stories are what help people remeber the point! One of the stories I incorporated when I spoke to those who had been laid off in the Silicon Valley was about a man who worked 3 jobs his whole life to keep a roof over his family's head, food on the table and basic needs. He finally retired when he was 65 and moved back to Texas where he had been raised. Six months later, he passed away. Then I'd go on to talk about quality of life issues; how we can spend our time with intention; the value of being able to spend time with family and encouragement to start their own business. At the end I would say, "The man who got to move back to Texas spent his who life trying to survive. What do you think he could have done to have had a better quality life and had time to spend with his family? That man was my father. He passed away at 71. Don't let your life slip by and not have your family have quality time with you." Years later people would approach me and tell me how that one story changed their lives.

Evolution of Your Speaking
I started teaching Professional Speaking to my Business Development entrepreneur clients after Tommy Hopkins had his advance team asked me to promote his event. They gave me free tickets for helping them and while I was at the event I realized we had as much talent in the San Francisco Bay Area and they should be on stage. Right about the same time, I saw an article that the IRS tracked people over various industries and they found those who speak in their community earned an average of 25% more than those who don't. So I created a course, SpeakEasy, and it was full in no time at all. I got them to break in their skills and content at the "Animal Circuit" (Rotary, Lions, Kiwanis Clubs). Interestingly enough, all of them averaged three referrals for additional speaking gigs and at least one or two new clients. One of my clients ended up getting booked for an internet marketing convention in Dallas and while there was booked for an event in England where he made $80,000 in one weekend and he didn't even have a product! When we start out to become a speaker, (I was kicking and screaming, "Not me!" because I grew up stuttering) we rarely end up with what we expect. I have been so priviledged to speak on major stages with the big names, on cruises (my favorite gig) and even with professional sports teams! I attended no less than six speaking programs all over the country, by those who had much more experience than I did, I attended every event when the big name speakers came to the SF Bay Area and I watched and learned from each one! I learned how to be more engaging, speak directly to the concerns of the audience (by showing up early and asking questions) and how to put my fears aside for the greater good of inspiring the audience. Speaking Professionally is a priviledge and an amazing gift! The next step for me is to speak to inspire people to step up and do something to help the 700,000 children living on the streets in the US who have no adult to provide or protect them. My project will take 2,000 of these kids a year to Belize for a high school/trade school program. I haven't found any stages yet but I've done over a hundred interviews and maybe one day I'll do a Ted Talk!

My biggest win is the level of people I've been able to connect with this year! Everyone has value and by nurturning the relationship, can become a strong advocate, but somehow, the people I've been meeting are a cut above in every way possible!

@Deborah Northcutt That is so smart Deborah! And the not feeling guilty about it, is perfect! Last year I finally broke down and used a calendar for people to book time with me and kept the hours between 11 am and 5 with an hour break in the middle. It was difficult at first to be disciplined enough to stick to it, but now that it's a habit, I don't feel so stressed about working so many hours I'm exhaused at the end of the day!
