What do you want to get out of the community? (And Welcome)
Hey Everybody A knew month so I thought I’d start a new welcome thread. Please comment and introduce yourself. Let me know what you are trying to achieve and if you have any questions about the resources. If you click on the “Classroom” tab you’ll get access to all the resources. My goal in June is to keep growing my consulting business and focus on re-building my construction project management course. The original is around 9 hours, but the new one I want to be around 30 hours and cover a few more important topics like software, AI and personal skills. Let me know if you have any questions!

@Tim Fairley Physically, I prefer to work within my local service area. The unique situation is that I live near the border of three jurisdictions. I’m about 10 minutes away from one, 10 minutes from another, and 10 minutes from the third. My preferred market is around Bethesda, Maryland. That’s my core service area. Parking is easier, logistics are simpler, and projects are generally easier to manage. I try to avoid projects in downtown Washington, DC whenever possible. Working there is very challenging because of parking restrictions, high-rise buildings, material deliveries, and the amount of time spent moving tools and materials in and out of the property. From an operational standpoint, those projects are often much less efficient. Ideally, I would like to focus on a radius of about 20 miles around Bethesda. At the moment, I work in Maryland and DC, but I have not yet obtained my contractor’s license for the third state. Because of that, I have already defined my target service area on the map and prefer to concentrate my efforts there.

@Tim Fairley Honestly, I only learned about government bidding recently from you. Before that, I mostly knew about commercial construction through YouTube channels and other contractors. One contractor I know tried government work and told me it can be difficult to get started without experience and a track record. He also mentioned that estimating mistakes can be expensive because if your bid is based on incorrect quantities or scope changes, you can lose money on the project. Yesterday I did some research and found that both Montgomery County and Washington, DC have procurement websites where contractors can register as vendors and view bidding opportunities. I’m still learning how the process works and trying to understand whether it makes sense for a company like mine to get involved.
