Name: Sean Age: 49 Belt / Experience: White/8 months Why you started jiu jitsu: Mid-life crisis maybe? I was curious and wanted a challenge. All that stuff about getting comfortable being uncomfortable, losing your ego, building confidence, and now just trying to learn and have fun. Biggest struggle right now: I hate the stand-up phase and takedowns - but I don’t avoid it. Goal for the next 90 days: I want to just stay consistent, learn, and keep it fun. I used to get real anxious before class, but I’m getting a lot better relaxing. I want to learn to relax more in general, learn to breathe, especially in tough rolls with younger aggressive people. Easier said than done!
☕️🥋 JUJUTSU CAFÉ – QUESTION OF THE DAY 🥋☕️
Let’s talk diet — and let’s keep it real. Every grappler I know eats a little different. Gerardo is vegan 🌱. Shawn is basically carnivore 🥩. And me? I’m somewhere in chaos 😂 I usually eat one meal a day, normally dinner. I’ll train, not eat much (or at all), then I’m starving and end up smashing fast food. I don’t meal prep, don’t really cook, and honestly don’t love home-cooked food. Might be the dishes, might be my cooking skills, might just be who I am 🤷‍♂️ I drink an energy drink a day… well, sometimes two 😅 And somehow it’s still working: - I’m losing weight - Gaining muscle - Training consistently That said, I do wonder how much better my performance would be with a more dialed-in diet. So let’s hear it 👇 🍽️ What do YOU eat as a grappler? - Vegan? Carnivore? Somewhere in between? - Do you meal prep or wing it? - Eat before training or after? - Clean eating or fast-food fueled rolls? No right or wrong answers — just curious how everyone fuels their jiu-jitsu. Let’s talk ☕️🥋

I meal prep and eat the same things all the time - chicken, vegetables, fruit, nuts, eggs, tuna, yogurt. I skip breakfast unless it’s the weekend, and I’m not usually hungry in the morning anyway. Vitamins and black coffee. Maybe a little Yogurt. No sodas. I drink LOTS of water all day and eat a banana and a spoonful of honey before class. I think it helps me keep up and survive! I’ve never really had a sweet tooth, kinda blessed in that way. If I have a pizza or a burger or a breakfast burrito, it’s once or twice a week on a day off, like a treat. I’ve been taking Creatine, I think it might be helping too. No alcohol, quit that 10 years ago, wasn’t helping me and didn’t enjoy it anymore. My diet has improved since starting training 8 months ago - I used to sit on the couch half-depressed and eat an entire bag of popcorn. Now I scramble after work to get ready for BJJ, get beat up, learn, sweat, and almost always have fun!
