The free and cheap editions are almost always translations from the 1890s or 1900s, because that's what's out of copyright. They were written to sound old and important, and they do. That's why you get twenty pages in and quit. Same book, modern translation, and it reads like a person talking to you. Before you buy any classic, look up the translator and the date. If they died before 1930, find a different edition. It's usually the whole difference between finishing and not.

Is The Prince a manual for tyrants, or the most honest book ever written about how power actually operates? Machiavelli says a ruler should be feared rather than loved. That appearing virtuous matters more than being virtuous. That results excuse methods. Which sounds monstrous. But he also claimed he was only describing what rulers actually do, rather than the flattering fiction everyone else was writing. So is naming the ugly truth the same as endorsing it? We're reading it in September in The Canon Club, and I suspect we're going to disagree with each other productively. But I'm curious where people land before they open it. Where's your instinct?

These stats are wild. Check it out.
